About the Artist

One of Sam Hollingsworth's goals in his watercolor paintings is to counter the "lack of intellectual content" he often finds in the medium. Hollingsworth's images bring intellectual content into the foreground, creating images that set up a dialogue with past masterpieces, as well as with "narratives derived from mythology, art history, science, literature and current events." The artist notes that his subjects are based on Surrealist themes, and his skill at juxtaposing highly realistic objects with landscapes that have a dreamlike feel lets him create worlds that compellingly communicate an almost ethereal impression.
